Madison Avenue

Madison Avenue, New York, NY

Madison Avenue did not exist when Manhattan streets plan was developed in 1811. The avenue was added later, in 1836, that is why the avenue has a name, rather than the usual for Manhattan number. It was named after the fourth US President James Madison.

Madison Avenue is often used as a common name to describe the advertising industry in New York City. The advertising business has started to develop in New York in 1861, and many agencies used to have their offices on Madison Avenue. Today, most moved to other areas of Manhattan.

As well as the neighboring Fifth Avenue, Madison is home to renowned flagship stores of famous brands, most of which are concentrated between 57th and 88th streets. Chanel, Jimmy Choo, Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Hermes, Ralph Lauren and many many others are among the Madison Avenue stores.
