Transportation from New York City airports

How to get from airport to New York? You can get from airport to New York by taxi, subway or a shuttle bus.

Most international flights arrive into JFK and Newark Liberty International Airport.

Arriving at JFK

A taxi from JFK. The fare from JFK to anywhere in Manhattan is a flat rate of $52 + Toll (around $10) + tips (~ 15-20%). The trip to Manhattan will take about 40 minutes (if the traffic is ok). Taxi to Brooklyn, Queens and Bronx is by the meter. The price to get to Brooklyn and Queens will be lower as JFK is located in Queens.

Official taxi of New York City is the Yellow cab. Not all taxi drivers speak good English, so to avoid misunderstandings, keep a printout with the address of the hotel and give it to the driver before he starts driving. It makes sense to do so even if he said he knew the hotel you travel to (there can be several hotels with the same name in the city, if it is a network hotel like Hilton or Holiday Inn).

AirTrain from JFK. AirTrain ($5) will connect you to New York subway, Jamaica Station. You will need to pay another $2.75 for a one-way travel if you continue the journey by subway. Find a line to get to your destination on the MTA website. Plan to spend no less than 1.5 hours on subway when you use AirTrain + Subway to get to the city.

Shuttle bus from JFK. There are several shuttle services that will take you to Midtown for $20-30 (sometimes less). Check Go Airlink NYC.

Arriving at Newark Liberty International Airport

A taxi from Newark airport. Your fare will be based on the meter, going to Midtown Manhattan will be around $60-70 (plus tip and tolls, plan for a total of about $100). If there is no traffic, you’ll get to Manhattan in about an hour. Taxi to Brooklyn, Queens and Bronx from Newark airport will be more expensive.

Shuttle Bus from Newark. Newark has several shuttle services that will take you to Manhattan for estimated $35-45 (sometimes less). The shuttle services include Go Airlink NYC.

Transportation between New York City airports
