M. Butterfly, one of Broadway’s most acclaimed and beloved plays returns in a viscerally theatrical new production directed by Julie Taymor, the groundbreaking, Tony Award-winning director of The Lion King, and starring Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe Award winner Clive Owen.

A groundbreaking play. A visionary director. A story of love, espionage and betrayal. M. Butterfly charts the scandalous romance between a married French diplomat and a mysterious Chinese opera singer – a remarkable love story of international espionage and betrayal. Their 20-year relationship pushed and blurred the boundaries between male and female, east and west – while redefining the nature of love and the devastating cost of deceit.

Both an intimate love story and an epic tale of political intrigue, this new sweeping staging will blend original music and song by Academy Award-winner Elliot Goldenthal with elaborate martial arts-inspired choreography by Ma Cong. And for this new version, Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang will introduce new material inspired by the scandalous real-life love affair between French diplomat Bernard Boursicot and Chinese opera singer Shi Pei Pu that has come to light since the play’s 1988 premiere.

“A brilliant play of ideas…a visionary work that bridges the history and culture of two worlds.” – Frank Rich, New York Times

Winner of every major theatrical prize, including the Tony Award, the Drama Desk Award, and the Outer Critics Circle Award.
